"Fish face" is perhaps the most compelling illustration of Ian Prior's paradoxical visual style. The artist's juxtaposition of grotesque blue-scaled fish over Beauty's face is challenging but also playful in a tongue-in-cheek surreal way. Technique and materials add an eloquent painterly style to this unique work.

Ian Prior’s paintings present potent imagery of creature-like portraits that ironically remain innately human – as distorted masks, supernatural beings, and alluring figures – playing with the viewer’s perception of appearance and beauty.

“The pieces are magazine images that I obliterate every part of the image apart from the eyes. Then I paint over again with oils. I believe the real eyes tell a more complex image. Eyes show the soul, so real eyes make for real souls. One pair of eyes and two faces offer a similar difference,” describes the artist.

Prior studied fine art and printmaking at St. Albans School of Art and Design, England before moving to the States in 1991. As well as working as a practicing artist, he has been a successful art director in Chicago since then, currently with Element 79.
