Artist's Statement: "The fathers of the colorist movement have lain the groundwork, and new artists continue to use their discoveries in their own work. Josef Albers explored the science of colors, and how they behave differently depending on the color beside them. It was Albers who discovered that the vertical stripe was the most efficient shape for delivering color to the eye. Gene Davis was responsible for the first vertical stripe studies, and many artists still employ this technique."

"My intention is to carry on this tradition and explore new ways of achieving depth, beauty, and emotional intensity through color. My paintings are painstakingly layered, and each stripe is mixed and painted without the help of digital or mechanical aids. Many colors are tried and repainted before the proper combinations emerge, which happens almost organically. This process leaves very small lines of intense color between the larger bands, so that the effect of the painting changes as the viewer moves closer to it. This is the basis for all of my paintings, and yet each finished piece has a very unique personality". -Greg Hildebrandt
