Since graduating with honors from the University of Plymouth, Darren Harvey-Regan has exhibited and published his work progressively in England with great reviews and enthusiastic public appreciation. We are happy to represent the artist now here at Artccentric.

Artist's Statement: 'I see my work as the creation of contemplative space: photographs as sites of reflection on the human presence, the landscape and the undisclosed stories that only connect them but give them meaning. The tensions created within the work express an uncertainty in the face of competing ideologies, beliefs and environmental concerns, as well as seeking a means of engagement.

My practice to date looks at land and the self in relationship to each other. I am interested in the appropriation of land into landscape throughout the history of Art, notably Romanticism's notion of the Sublime in the work of painters such as Casper David Friedrich and J M W Turner and their use of land as a vocabulary to refer to concepts and states beyond itself.

In my work I seek to encourage the viewer towards more mythological and subjective readings of landscape through gestural inventions within both the land and the photographic process itself. Recent work, for example, has involved the fabrication of landscapes which suggest an approachability but quickly give way to the realization of an impenetrable construct.'

The Sticks Series: All the images in this series are comprised of ‘gestural interventions within the landscape’ according to the artist, who uses props of clothing items suspended on the end of a stick in remote, desolate-looking English landscape (moors mostly).

‘Sticks offers neither questions nor answers but rather a representation of the space in-between and its inherent tensions: the ambiguity between absence and presence, known and unknown, the hidden and the revealed. I feel it is through the absence of something that its essential nature might be more fully considered.’

All the photos in the series were taken with a medium-format camera, mostly in Dartmoor, an area of moorland in the center of Devon, England. Each image is a C-type print in a small, limited edition signed by the artist.
